Licences
This product ships only code we are free to view, copy, modify and distribute. The media engine is LGPL, and its source is offered below.
The media engine
The engine is offered under the LGPL, so its complete corresponding source — the upstream release together with the exact build script we use — is available for download. It is a separate program we invoke, not a library we link, which is why the rest of this product can stay closed.
| Component | Licence | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg 6.1.1 | LGPL-2.1-or-later | The media engine: it muxes, decodes and filters. We build our own variant with --disable-gpl so no GPL code is linked, and run it as a separate program rather than linking it, which is what keeps our own code closed. |
| libvpx | BSD-3-Clause | VP8/VP9 encode and decode — our default video codec |
| libaom | BSD-2-Clause | AV1 encode |
| dav1d | BSD-2-Clause | AV1 decode |
| libopus | BSD-3-Clause | Opus audio |
| libass | ISC | Subtitle rendering |
| HarfBuzz | MIT | Text shaping for title cards and captions |
| FreeType | FTL / GPLv2 dual | Font rasterisation (used under the FTL) |
| Fontconfig | MIT-like | Font discovery |
| FriBidi | LGPL-2.1-or-later | Bidirectional text for subtitles |
Download the corresponding source (upstream FFmpeg release plus our build script). If a download is not possible, write to us and we will provide it another way.
The application
Everything else the product runs on, all permissive.
| Component | Licence | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Next.js | MIT | The web framework |
| React | MIT | The interface |
| Prisma | Apache-2.0 | Database access |
| node-postgres (pg) | MIT | PostgreSQL driver |
| Zod | MIT | Input validation |
| Tailwind CSS | MIT | Styling |
| sharp (with libvips) | Apache-2.0 / LGPL-3.0 | Image processing for thumbnails and cover images. libvips is LGPL and is kept replaceable; its source is offered on request under the same terms. |
Our policy
We ship only code we are free to view, copy, modify and distribute. That means permissive licences (MIT, ISC, BSD, Apache-2.0, Zlib) and, for the media engine, the LGPL — never the GPL or AGPL, which would require us to publish our own source. Our own code, and everything we build on top, remains ours.
