Our WhatsApp
Private messages between your own people.
Our WhatsApp is direct messaging you run yourself. The people on your install hold private conversations with each other — one thread per pair — and messages arrive live as they are written. Nothing leaves your own server and no phone number is involved.
A conversation is between exactly two people, and that is a rule, not a setting: every read and every write checks that you are one of the two, so a thread is never shown to anyone else. A message is not a post — it is not published, not adapted for a network and not sent to any connector — which is what keeps a private line private. Delivery reuses the same live channel as the chat beside your videos, so a message appears as it is written without a second system to run.
Step by step
How to send your first direct message
Every step is the real one in your own install. Nothing is sent to a third party and no phone number is needed.
- STEP 01
Have someone to message
Direct messages go to the people on your install. If you are the only person here, add a team member on the People page first — they will appear in the picker.
- STEP 02
Open Messages
From your workspace, open Our WhatsApp. It lists your conversations, most recently active first, and it is where a new one starts.
- STEP 03
Start a conversation
Choose “New message” and pick the person you want to talk to. If you have talked to them before, it opens the same thread rather than starting a second one.
- STEP 04
Write and send
Type your message and send it. It appears in the thread straight away, and for the other person as soon as they are looking at it.
- STEP 05
Keep the thread
Replies stack in the same conversation, oldest at the top and newest at the bottom, so the thread reads like a conversation rather than a feed.
What it does
Everything a private conversation needs, and nothing that leaves
A conversation between two people
Every thread is between exactly two people on your install. That is stated in the data, not left to code: the same two people always share one thread, whichever of them opened it, so you never end up talking past each other in two conversations.
Messages arrive as they are written
New messages are pushed to the other person over a live stream, so a reply appears as it is sent rather than on a refresh. If the live stream is ever interrupted, the thread still updates on a short interval, so a message is late rather than lost.
Private by rule, not by luck
Every read and every write checks that you are one of the two people in the conversation. Anyone else gets the same answer as a conversation that does not exist, so a thread is never confirmed to a stranger, let alone shown.
Your people, from your directory
The people you can message are the people on your install — the same directory your wall and your photos use. There is no global address book and no way to message a stranger.
A moderator can pull a line
Hosting content makes it your problem, so a message can be removed from a thread. The record is kept rather than destroyed, so pulling a line is reversible and the history is not lost.
No phone number, no third party
There is no phone number, no SIM and no external account. Messages are rows in your own database and never touch anyone else's server.
