Our Meta
The people who make it yours.

Our Meta is the people layer of your own platform. It is a directory of everyone on your install, a profile page for each of them, and follow and unfollow between them — the identity the other apps sign their posts with, so a post belongs to a person rather than to whoever typed it.

Before this app, every social app was owner-only: one author, and the client chose the name. Our Meta adds the author the content model was missing. A post is now signed by the person who wrote it, and the people who can read it are the ones who follow them. What it is not is a global account: it is an identity on this installation, because the product is single-tenant — your people are the people on your server, which is the whole idea.

Step by step

How to build your directory and follow people

The real steps in your own install: a directory, a profile for each person, and follow and unfollow.

  1. STEP 01

    Open Our Meta

From your workspace, open Our Meta. It is the people directory that is already part of your install.

  2. STEP 02

See who is on your install

The directory lists everyone, with their handle and their picture, so you can find the people you want to follow.

  3. STEP 03

    Open a person's profile

Each person has a profile page on your domain showing who they are and what they have posted.

  4. STEP 04

    Follow the people you want

Follow someone and their posts reach your feed; unfollow them and they stop. You choose whose posts you see.

  5. STEP 05

Let your posts carry your name

Because the directory is the author, what you post is signed by you, and it reaches the people who follow you.

What it does

Everything a movie needs, without a camera

  • A directory of everyone

Every person on your install in one place, with their handle and their picture, so you can find anyone rather than remembering an address.

  • A profile for each person

Each person gets a page on your domain showing who they are and what they have posted — the address they share instead of a profile on someone else's site.

  • Follow and unfollow

You choose whose posts reach your feed. Following is a real relationship you can end, not an invisible setting buried in a menu.

  • Posts signed by their author

Because there is now a person behind each post, a post is signed by the person who wrote it rather than by a name the client chose — the difference between a feed and a wall of anonymous text.

  • The identity the other apps use

Your wall, your photos and your videos all draw their people from this one directory, so you have one set of people rather than one per app.

  • An identity on your server

Your people are the people on your own installation, not accounts on a global service. That is what makes the audience yours.

Questions

Questions people ask

Straight answers, and where something is not built yet it says so.

What is Our Meta?
It is the people layer of your own platform: a directory of everyone on your install, a profile for each person, and follow and unfollow between them. It is the identity the other apps sign their posts with.
Is this a global account, like a single sign-on?
No. It is an identity on your own installation, not an account on a global service. The product is single-tenant: your people are the people on your server, which is what keeps the audience yours.
Why does the platform need a people app at all?
Because a post needs an author. Before it, every social app was owner-only and the client chose the name on a post. This app adds the person behind the post, so content belongs to someone rather than to whoever typed it.
Can I stop following someone?
Yes. Following is a real relationship you can end: unfollow and their posts stop reaching your feed.
Do the other apps share these people?
Yes. Your wall, your photos and your videos all draw their people from this one directory, so you have one set of people across your whole install.
