Our Facebook
Your profile, your wall, your rules.

Our Facebook is your own profile and wall. You get a profile page with your name, your handle and your picture, and a wall you post to: text and links, with comments and likes from the people on your install. It is the familiar shape of a social profile, on a domain you own.

Nothing sits between you and the people who follow you: there is no ranking algorithm choosing who sees your post, and no adverts in the middle of the conversation. The wall, the comments and the likes all run today; what is not built is a separate friends model, because an audience identity is a larger decision than a wall, and the app is honest about which half it has.

Step by step

How to set up your wall and post to it

These are the real steps in your own install: a profile, a post, a comment and a like. Nothing needs anyone's approval.

  1. STEP 01

    Open Our Facebook

From your workspace, open Our Facebook. It is your profile and your wall, already part of your install.

  2. STEP 02

    Set up your profile

Add your name, your handle and a picture. This is the page people land on when they look you up on your domain.

  3. STEP 03

    Write a post

Write to your wall — a sentence, a thought, a link. It is published under your name and appears on your profile.

  4. STEP 04

    Reply and like

Open a post and add a comment, or like it. The conversation is attached to the post, on your own server.

  5. STEP 05

    Share your profile

Send the address of your profile on your own domain. It is the one link that shows who you are and what you have posted.

What it does

Everything a movie needs, without a camera

  • A profile you own

Your name, your handle and your picture on a page on your own domain — the address you share instead of a profile on someone else's site.

  • A wall you post to

Post text and links to your wall, where the people on your install can read them, in the order they were written rather than the order an algorithm chose.

  • Comments and likes

The people who read your post can reply to it and like it, so a wall is a conversation rather than an announcement.

  • No ranking algorithm

Posts appear in the order they were made. Nobody's feed is filtered to increase the time they spend looking at it.

  • No adverts

There is nothing inserted into your wall and nothing sold against your attention, because you are the one who runs it.

  • The same people as your other apps

The people you post to are the handles from your own install's directory, so your wall, your photos and your video share one set of people rather than three.

Questions

Questions people ask

Straight answers, and where something is not built yet it says so.

What is Our Facebook?
It is your own profile and wall, running on your own server. You get a profile page and a wall you post to, with comments and likes from the people on your install, all on a domain you own.
Does it have friends?
Not yet. The wall, the comments and the likes are built and run; a separate friends model is not, because an audience identity is a bigger decision and it is better to be honest about which half exists.
Can other people post to my wall?
They can comment on what you post. A post is signed by the person who wrote it, and the people who can read and reply are the handles on your own install.
Is there an algorithm deciding who sees my post?
No. Posts appear in the order they were written and go to the people who follow you. Nothing is reordered to keep anyone scrolling.
Where does my content live?
On your own server, in the same content store as your other apps, and nowhere else.
